What causes sensitive skin?

Internal factors

Hereditary genes that give rise to sensitive skin usually result in very dry skin which is also prone to allergies. Such sensitive skin can also be caused by imbalance in internal secretions due to environmental factors, physical illness, nutritional imbalances, psychological factors, drug factors , improper maintenance etc.
One type of skin condition is Eczema. Eczema is one of the most common inflammatory skin allergies. Those suffering from eczema tend to have rashes that can relapse easily.

External factors

1. Contact dermatitis
When the skin comes in contact with irritants such as acids, alkalis, or cosmetics, medicines, clothing, dust, plants or animals,  the skin may be infected as a result. One such example is cosmetic dermatitis.
Cosmetic dermatitis
Cosmetic dermatitis is caused by exposure to paint particles and cosmetics. It is characterized by pigmentation and itchiness and more common in actors and young women who heavily rely on cosmetics.

2. Physical Environment
The ambient temperature, humidity, wind and a variety of light, radiation and other physical factors can act as direct stimulants to irritate the skin.
Sunburn is caused by over-exposure to sunlight, causing skin to appear red and start to swell.  The face, neck and forearms are more prone to being burnt. The redness usually appear four to six hours after exposure to the sun and start to peak 12-24 hours later.
